"Today, Be the best you can be"

The development of an idea...

Well, it’s the end of another year, oh my! And the New Year’s resolutions start…. I like to think I am continuing on with a promise I made to myself about 20 months ago. The New Year is a perfect time to reflect and adjust that promise.

Before I mention the promise to myself, a query for you all… who gets out and about and exercises?? I’ll admit I have a roller coaster relationship with the whole exercise thing, but I LOVE food and quilting, of course!

"What has all this got to do with quilting?" you ask.

Give me a moment of your time and let me tell you a story about a special quilt & its development…

It all started about 20 months ago when I had some knee surgery (due to a badly torn & mangled meniscus. Apparently it was an “interesting” surgery, the statement no-one wants to hear from your surgeon, basically further surgery will happen but I can help extend the timeframe by looking after my knees). It made me stop and think about how and why I exercised and looked after myself as a whole. Rehabilitation was extremely important and strength and conditioning work was the new norm. Then COVID-19 hit and was a definitive hiccup in my plans, but also an opportunity to explore other forms of exercise and self-reflection. Morning walks, yoga and stretching were part of my normal new daily routine. Along with a new daily routine, there needed to be a new inspiration. “Today, Be the best you can be” was perfect. This was my promise to myself.

The gyms re-opened and an idea of a quilt started forming. Kettle bells are actually really cool shapes. Suddenly I was looking at the gym in a whole new way! It’s a limited colour range, but pops of colour make all the difference. The quilt design was started but just didn’t seem to sit right. So I left it, to ponder on another time.

Then 12 months ago we moved, and lots of other life chaos happened, and my exercise routine fell apart. It took time to get back to the exercise side of life, I had a million excuses but have finally got myself back into some sort of routine and remembered my promise to myself. I have found some wonderful swim buddies (some even quilt, massive bonus!), and rediscovered my love of swimming. I’m finally feeling strong enough to start expanding my exercise diversity! Maybe Pilates??

Two weeks ago I picked up the quilt design again & the errors were glaringly obvious. I worked some magic, and it’s now moved into “being made stage”. YAY! I’ll start posting some photos on Instagram soon, so keep an eye out for it. Meanwhile, here's some 'creative' mess. : -)

So this quilt is a little like life, take each day as it comes & “Today, Be the best you can be.”

May your new year be happy, joyous & continue on with your promise to yourself.

Stay safe and most of all, Happy sewing!

Anita : -)
